Bauxite mining

The mineral foundation of the aluminium value chain.

Technical information

The mineral foundation of the aluminium value chain.

Bauxite is the principal raw material for primary aluminium production. A mining programme starts with understanding the deposit, the composition of the ore and the practical conditions for extraction. Mine planning coordinates access, selective extraction and the movement of material to preparation and transport systems.

The quality of the bauxite influences the work of the refinery. Sampling, moisture management and material blending help prepare a consistent feed. Land management, water control and rehabilitation planning belong alongside production planning from the outset. In the Guayana development context, the connection between the mine, river transport and refinery is an essential part of the industrial system.

The mining operation organizes access to the deposit, selective extraction, and bauxite transport. Its industrial objective is to feed the refinery with a characterized material stream compatible with the production program.

Transformation sequence

  1. 01

    Mine Face Planning

Deposit information is transformed into an extraction sequence. Accesses, material movements, and work areas are coordinated with the expected ore quality. Scheduling considers terrain conditions and fleet availability.

  2. 02

    Extraction and Preparation

Excavation, loading, and hauling equipment move bauxite to preparation points. When the route requires it, crushing and classification condition the material for subsequent handling. Feed control prevents preparation from depending on irregular deliveries.

  3. 03

    Stockpiling and Transfer

Yards allow for organizing stocks, identifying materials, and preparing blends. Dispatch to the refinery is synchronized with conveyors and terminals. In the context of Guayana, the river connection is part of the logistical analysis between mine and refining center.

Equipment and systems

  • Excavation, loading, and hauling equipment
  • Crushers and classification systems according to route
  • Conveyors, hoppers, and stockpiling yards
  • Sampling and terminal loading equipment

Process control and quality

Characterization considers the ore's composition, moisture, and properties relevant to the refinery. Provenance and blending records allow relating subsequent process variations to the fed material.

Operational continuity

Fleet availability, belts, and transfer points condition the feed. Maintenance is coordinated with stockpiling capacity and transport windows to prevent a local interruption from propagating throughout the chain.

Connection to the next stage

Prepared bauxite is delivered to the refinery with origin identification, characterization, and agreed reception conditions.
